FLOWER magazine

We all know that there are numerous gardening magazines on the newsstand (I think I subscribe to most of them!) but you might be hard-pressed to find a magazine totally devoted to flowers and the art of flower arranging. Well, not anymore! Flower magazine began in March 2007 and it is published right here in Alabama.

The magazine's founder, Margot Shaw, says, “My desire is to expose as many people as possible to the joys of flowering I guess you could say I am trying to democratize flowers and floral design. It’s too much fun and shouldn't’t be intimidating,” Margot explains. “I’m hoping that experienced floral designers will enjoy the magazine as much as budding designers like me.”

I recently received the latest issue to review and the magazine is indeed a very beautiful publication, filled with outstanding photography and interesting stories about various aspects of the flower world and industry.

The Summer 2009 issue is devoted to "New Orleans in Bloom" and features various flowery articles about the Big Easy like a profile on Meade Wenzel whose floral designs decorate weddings, balls and other festivities in the city, a Secret Gardens tour, the first since Hurricane Katrina and how flowers are used to celebrate Mardi Gras.

Regular features that appear in each issue include "Leafing Through" (book reviews), "Flower Shop" (home accessories and where to buy them), "Mimi's Mechanics" (Editor Mimi Brown illustrates how to put together arrangements with step-by-step photos), and "Profiles in Petals" (spotlighting notable floral designers). Also included are articles about individual flowers and plants, flower shows, weddings and other events taking place in the world of flowers.

Flower is published four times a year and the subscription cost is $14.99. You can subscribe or visit their website for more information.

Bravo to them and I'll subscribe for sure. Wonderful write up and we really need to support those who still put thought to paper.

Now this sounds like something I would enjoy. Obviously I love flowers but I also make flower arrangements where I work. I don't get to use real flowers but silk. I am always looking for inspiration.

Shoot--I didn't realize I was supposed to be intimidated by floral design! LOL.

I love seeing other people's flower arrangements but I rarely cut flowers. I may very well subscribe just to get ideas about combinations that would work well together in the garden.

I've never been a huge fan of flower arrangements. I think it's because I like the foliage as much if not more than the flowers themselves. Large groupings of flowers have always seemed somewhat odd and unnecessary to me. Maybe I'm just bitter because I'm a poor student...

It sounds like a great magazine, I love flowers no matter where they are. I rarely pick mine because I have no idea how to make them look nice in a vase. Any place to get ideas sounds great to me.

I have been a flower arranger for over 25 years... weddings and other special events... fun in NY for a bit designing... but I could not take that long. I find that magazines come up with the weirdest ideas to fill their pages monthly. Trends you know... Funny thing is that I rarely have any cut flowers in my home. When I see all the life that depends on the blooms in the garden, I just cannot bear to cut them. I just enjoy them outdoors. You give a lovely review here, which entices me to want to visit the magazines site to learn more.
