A new toy

Last week I was in the middle of blowing our leaves when the leaf blower died. The power suddenly decreased, the volume dropped and there was a slight burning odor. It had been a good one. It belonged to my father who died in 2001 so I estimate that is was at least 10 years old.

It's funny but I never thought we would need a leaf blower. I had never used one and I'm not a fan of noise of any kind. However, after our trees started to mature, the leaves blanketed our garden and we discovered that the leaf blower came to good use. It is now a favorite chore (with the exception of the noise) and it is one of the few garden chores that Michael still enjoys. There is a satisfying sense of accomplishment clearing out the pathways and the driveway and getting the garden all neat and tidy.

Daddy's leaf blower was a Toro and it was such a good one so I wanted to get another one. Home Depot carried it (at the same price as Amazon) so I just picked it up at our HD store this morning. This one is a little more advanced. There is an attachment that you can use to vacuum up the leaves and a metal impeller shreds the leaves. Instant mulch! This one also has an adjustment that controls the air speed and volume. It seems to be more powerful than the older one and I hope it lasts as long.

Phillip,

If you were married to Meg she would be filing for a divorce. She hates them. Make you a bet though. Give me a big rake and you take the leaf blower, I'll finish half the leaves before you every time. They are noisy and time wasters. Given one must handle a rake pretty good to beat the blower, I'm talking when you have tons of leaves on the ground.

I'm with you! I absolutely hate the noise, but love the satisfaction that comes with neatening up the garden a little in the fall. I'm about 50/50 with rakes and leafblowers. There is still something very satisfying about spending a sunny afternoon raking the garden!

I still like raking...but we got an unexpected sump of snow and now the leaves need to be shoveled. Enjoy your new toy!

When dh's died he bought a battery-operated one. It's great for blowing leaves off the roof. I don't care for the noise either. That's why you'll only see me with a rake or broom.

My husband uses a leaf blower for our porch and two driveways...I'm going to try it on my gravel path in the garden...
