We all know that there are numerous gardening magazines on the newsstand (I think I subscribe to most of them!) but you might be hard-pressed to find a magazine totally devoted to flowers and the art of flower arranging. Well, not anymore!
Flower magazine began in March 2007 and it is published right here in Alabama.
The magazine's founder, Margot Shaw, says, “My desire is to expose as many people as possible to the joys of flowering I guess you could say I am trying to democratize flowers and floral design. It’s too much fun and shouldn't’t be intimidating,” Margot explains. “I’m hoping that experienced floral designers will enjoy the magazine as much as budding designers like me.”
I recently received the latest issue to review and the magazine is indeed a very beautiful publication, filled with outstanding photography and interesting stories about various aspects of the flower world and industry.
The Summer 2009 issue is devoted to "New Orleans in Bloom" and features various flowery articles about the Big Easy like a profile on Meade Wenzel whose floral designs decorate weddings, balls and other festivities in the city, a Secret Gardens tour, the first since Hurricane Katrina and how flowers are used to celebrate Mardi Gras.
Regular features that appear in each issue include "Leafing Through" (book reviews), "Flower Shop" (home accessories and where to buy them), "Mimi's Mechanics" (Editor Mimi Brown illustrates how to put together arrangements with step-by-step photos), and "Profiles in Petals" (spotlighting notable floral designers). Also included are articles about individual flowers and plants, flower shows, weddings and other events taking place in the world of flowers.
Flower is published four times a year and the subscription cost is $14.99. You can
