Winter Shopping at Cistus & Means Nursery

I received a nice gift certificate last year for opening our garden for Study Weekend. There were a number of nurseries to choose from and I chose Cistus. I am just now getting around to using it and of course I spent all of it and then some. I think because most of us are cooped up this time of year, the weather is not comfortable, and the mere fact of going months without buying any plants, sends us into withdrawal.

I kept telling myself that I should wait closer to spring and there might be a bigger selection but never mind that, I visited the Cistus website one night and started making a list and there was no going back. I can hear the question you are asking - where on earth will these plants go? Well, I will face that ordeal when it arrives. I'm already moving things around.

Here is what I came home with (and this involved multiple trips, a long story for another time) -
  • Asphodeline lutea (King's Spear)
  • Beschorneria stricta 'Tip-a-LaPena'
  • Billbergia nutans (Friendship Plant)
  • Chiastophyllum oppositifolium (Lamb's Tail)
  • Coniogramme emeiensis 'Golden Zebra' (Bamboo Fern)
  • Ledebouria cooperi ('Cooper's False Scilla)
  • Leptospermum grandifolium (Mountain Tee Tree)
  • Osmanthus fragrans 'Beni Kin Mokusei'
  • Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Kaori Hime'
  • Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Silver Ruffles'
  • Pittosporum tobira 'Dr. Yokoi'
  • Sarcococca trinervia 'BSWJ'
If that wasn't enough, I decided to drive eight miles down the road to Means Nursery. This is a nursery that I've heard about for a long time and never visited. I rarely drive to Portland because the traffic makes me a nervous wreck, but since I was so close and had the extra time, plus the traffic isn't too bad in this area, I decided to take the detour. Located in Scappoose, it is a small nursery, but I was told that they will be moving to a new location soon. They did have a nice selection of plants and a huge selection of rhododendrons. I came home with a gigantic Cordyline 'Red Star' and Erica 'Eva's Gold'.

On my last trip to Cistus, Tamara (Chickadee Gardens) walked me around the garden, a sight for sore eyes during the winter months -
