Swapping Huckleberries

Himalayan Honeysuckle ( Vaccinium glauco album)  Himalayan Honeysuckle ( Vaccinium glauco album) has been an attractive feature along our north-facing foundation since I planted it in 2016. You will have to take my word for it since I cannot locate a photo although I know one exists somewhere in the realm of the Internet or floating on a cloud somewhere.  I did locate a photo of how it looked when it was first planted - It took a few years to fill out but it did so nicely to an attractive mound about 2 feet high by 3 feet wide.  Last year, it started to look bad.  I cut it back but it had not improved and this is how it looked a few weeks ago - I decided to rip it out and plant another huckleberry - this time Vaccinium ovatum , more commonly known as the "Evergreen Huckleberry".  This is a plant that I've wanted for ages and kept putting off getting one because I could not find a good place for it. By most accounts, this is an amazing plant, a native one and excellent for

It's snowing!

A rare event in my neck of the woods and we all go nuts. It started around 2pm and was still coming down at 5pm. Most of it is melting though. I managed to take a few shots when I got home from work before it got too dark. You can't see it falling in the photos - how do you photograph falling snow?

  1. Phillip, your winter garden looks great. Enticing structure in every view, and your Southern garden is nice and green.

  3. A rare event indeed, Phillip. I was ten before I saw a real snowfall in Alabama. I am amused by the story of a little girl in Florida upon seeing her first snowfall. " Look, Mommy, the rain has popped ! "

This morning's paper shows rainfall in the deep South. Have you had any significant coverage ?

  4. My compliments on your beautiful garden. Mine is currently under about a foot and a half of snow. It will stay that way most likely till sometime in March or April. I was interested to see that you are taking a Master Gardner's course. I start mine tomorrow for Northern gardening.

  6. Phillip,
Wasn't the snow just wonderful? In the South is brings out the kid in every adult. Ours came down hard for a little while, but was gone in just a few hours.

  7. Hi Phillip,
Nice shots of your snowfall. We got a dusting over here in Vicksburg, MS, but it melted soon as it hit the ground. It was fun to see and realize that the rare event brings out the hidden kid within us all. Best regards,

  8. You like me, had a rare and wonderful sight down here in the South. I ended up having to do a short video of it to catch the flakes. You are right it is difficult to catch it on the camera.
