A Closer Look at Winter Damage

But first, take a look at this gorgeous rainbow that we had on Friday! The five-day stretch of warm temperatures last week really jump-started the garden. Now that plants are putting out new growth, it is easier to see what kind of damage the winter left. Back in mid-January, we experienced five straight days of below-freezing temperatures. This caused much damage in Portland and areas where frigid winds were a factor. Here, we were fortunate to not get the wind and the cold temperatures were dampened by a blanket of snow. That said, it was a tough time for the garden and there are noticeable casualties but no outright deaths that I have seen. The bottlebrush ( Callistemon 'Woodlander's Red') did not like the cold at all. It was planted six years ago, in the north-facing garden no less, and I've not experienced die-back on it until now. A local expert said to cut it all the way back so that is what I did. If it doesn't make it, I won't be too distraught. It is

Hummingbird Feeder Giveaway

THIS CONTEST IS CLOSED. Thanks for your entries. The winner is Jan of Thanks for 2 Day!

I noticed that our local Wal-Mart still has some of the hummingbird feeders like the one in the photo for Wordless Wednesday (see the previous post). I picked up one and decided to have a little contest in appreciation of all the great people who visit Dirt Therapy.

To enter, just leave a comment to this post. Next Friday (one week from today, Aug. 14), I will draw a name from all the entries.

I noticed on the tag that the feeder is available from www.birdfeeders.com although I must say the price is significantly cheaper at Wal-Mart.

Good luck!

  65. Don't be too sure you don't have hummingbirds. I lived in NC for 11 years and had a hummingbird feeder right outside the kitchen window. They would come by the droves and some days I filled the feeder twice. They were so human acclimated that I could sit right by the window and talk to them and they wouldn't leave. When I moved back north to the Poconos in central PA I figured by days of watching hummingbirds was over but hung a feeder out anyway and lo there they were. Not in the great numbers as in NC but quite a few and they come all summer. Would love to have this one for them.
