A Closer Look at Winter Damage
But first, take a look at this gorgeous rainbow that we had on Friday! The five-day stretch of warm temperatures last week really jump-started the garden. Now that plants are putting out new growth, it is easier to see what kind of damage the winter left. Back in mid-January, we experienced five straight days of below-freezing temperatures. This caused much damage in Portland and areas where frigid winds were a factor. Here, we were fortunate to not get the wind and the cold temperatures were dampened by a blanket of snow. That said, it was a tough time for the garden and there are noticeable casualties but no outright deaths that I have seen. The bottlebrush ( Callistemon 'Woodlander's Red') did not like the cold at all. It was planted six years ago, in the north-facing garden no less, and I've not experienced die-back on it until now. A local expert said to cut it all the way back so that is what I did. If it doesn't make it, I won't be too distraught. It is
That was such a nice thing for you to do! Congrats to Jan.
ReplyDeleteAnd it must've been gratifying to see how many readers you have who lurk but may not post frequently.
Hi C.C. - it looked like a lot of entries came from people whose hobbies are entering giveaways. I must have gotten on a list somewhere and the word spread.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations, Jan.
ReplyDeleteHi Phillip, so glad Jan won the hummingbird feeder! :-)

ReplyDeleteOh, that's too bad. They don't know what they're missing!
Couldn't have gone to a better person.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad Jan won it
Congrats to Jan.
ReplyDeletePhillip - I just looked at how many comments you had - wow they came out of the woodwork for that one didn't they.
ReplyDeleteThat was so nice! Congrats Jan! (and I totally missed that day). :(
ReplyDeleteWow, dear Phillip, I almost missed this post of yours! I just 'happened' to see it...'cause I wasn't looking for it, that's for sure! What a wonderful surprise;-) I'm so thrilled, and it's very special, coming from you! I loved it the moment I saw it on your earlier post...guess we were just a match made in heaven...ha ha.
ReplyDeleteI'll leave you a separate comment w/my email, and you can just erase that, ok? Thanks again;-) Jan

ReplyDeleteCongrats Jan!
ReplyDeleteGlad the feeder is going to a great home!
ReplyDeleteHi Phillip, I've been trying to reach you by your email contact, however my microsoft outlook won't let me get through. Is there another way we can be in touch? I could leave my email on your Blotanical plot, if you'd like? I noticed you don't visit that much so wasn't sure if you'd get it there. If I put it here, it automatically goes to your comments and I don't really want a lot of viewers of my email address. Just leave a comment to tell me if you'd like me to put it on your plot at Blot'l. Again, I'm so thrilled! Thx!
ReplyDeleteJan, you can leave me messages at Blotanical. I will try to visit there more often!
ReplyDeleteCongrats to Jan from Montana. Wish I could send you the 3 little hummingbirds that are continually battling over my honeysuckle, They love it, They do keep my cat entertained. He loves to sit in the window and watch. Hope the hummingbird feeder brings you lots of happiness and good fortune.
ReplyDeleteThat post didn't sound quite right. I meant congratulations form a reader in MT to Jan. When I reread it it sounded like I meant Jan was from MT. Sorry.
ReplyDeletecongrats jan, wow 182 comments. it's hard to imagine people entering a contest just to win something. Suppose you win and don't like hummingbirds.
