The First Peony - 'Shima-Nishiki'

The Tree Peony 'Shima-Nishiki' is the first to bloom. The name means "fire flame" in Japanese, an apt title to describe the red blooms striped with white. Occasionally, there are solid red blooms. Every year this peony gets better and seemingly overnight, the puny-looking bare branches are suddenly fleshed out with a tremendous profusion of leaves. The bush is dense, forming a 4 ft. mound. Our plant resides at the top of one of the terrace beds in back where it gets some morning sun and dappled sun (mostly shade) for the remainder of the day.  We have many peonies in the garden and they all came from Adelman Peony Gardens in Salem, Oregon. It is worth a drive just to see their beautiful display garden in May. Text and photos by Phillip Oliver, Dirt Therapy

Rain, glorious rain!

At this point, this is better than a Monet!

At least 1.5" since 6 a.m. and it continues...

  1. Wonderful! It's supposedly coming our way too, nice and steady, just what we need (no rain in our area of NC for almost 6 weeks) but I'm not seeing much movement heading east on the radar map right now.

  2. Please, when you are done with it, may we have what is left over?

  3. We haven't gotten nearly that much in Tupelo but I'm SO appreciative for what we have gotten! It's been a difficult summer for my plants!

  4. Nothing compares to a Monet, Phillip, but getting much needed rain is pretty darn close.

Send some on up our way, won't ya ? A pretty dry August and September here.

  6. I am so happy for you!! Your garden will look so perky in the morning. I am just green with envy. It has cooled down here by about 20 degrees but still no rain. Seeing this makes me hopeful.

  7. How fabulous! Hope it gets to my garden before the well goes dry.
Also some cooler temps would be welcome.

  8. Yes, we finally got rain, too. I can hardly believe how quickly the plants revived with the first rain shower.
