Still blooming...

Fuchsia 'June Bride'

This is December 22nd and we have not had a freeze yet! Unbelievable! I've not heard the weather people say whether or not this is a record, but surely it is.

The hummingbirds are loving this. We keep our feeders filled, but I know they enjoy the additional flowers. We have a clump of three Salvia 'Amistad' outside the bathroom window and every time I look out the window, I see one buzzing them.

Salvia 'Hot Lips'

They also love the fuchsias, and many are blooming at the moment. Last week, we got the exciting news (not!) that we need a new roof. When the inspector came out, he kept commenting on the big 'Lady Boothby' that is covered with blooms next to the front window. He kept saying he didn't realize flowers bloomed in December...

The Mexican Orange (Choisya 'Sundance') is especially pretty this year -

Camellias do well here in the Pacific Northwest, but the winter-blooming varieties are so often damaged, if not by cold weather, then by the rains that reduce them to a sodden mess. Sometimes, there is a reprieve. The cascading camellia 'Marge Miller' has been a blooming machine this year. More blooms than ever...

Fatsia 'Spider's Web' has been blooming for months -

What beautiful flowers. Here in Central Virginia we’re having the coldest December I can remember. You must have sent your cold weather to us! Thanks for the zen flower moment.

I've heard that the PNW is enjoying record warmth, along with rain. I'm glad it's accompanied by floral color to cheer on the holidays. Best wishes, Phillip!

I always love the saturated color of Salvia 'Amistad'. Does it winter over in the ground in your garden? -Chavli

It has only happened one time when it was planted in a more sheltered location and it was probably a mild winter. I think the ones I have now, considering that they are planted on the warm, south side of the house and close to the wall.
