The Garden Awakens

Anise 'Woodland Red' ( Illicium floridanum ) A few weeks ago, I thought spring would never arrive, but now the change is astonishing. The nights are still cold (40s and sometimes even 30s) so planting tender annuals and vegetables is unwise although I have already succumbed, but covering and uncovering things gets old quickly. Someone made a wise comment last week and I must agree with them - "Don't plant anything tender until after May 1". Several plants are blooming like never before. One is the Anise shrub (above and below). I don't know if the recent tree pruning, which is allowing more sun into the woodland path, is affecting it or perhaps it is just age, but I've never seen so many blooms. Michael refers to this as "the stinky fish shrub" and I have to admit to smell of the flowers is quite unpleasant. It is so beautiful that I can overlook that. Garden themed ornaments

Some bloggers are sharing their garden related Christmas ornaments and we have quite a few. This is just a small sampling.





















That last ornament is just one of many that Michael and I cross-stitched many years ago. I think we spent an entire winter doing those ornaments.

    I *thought* Santa was a winter gardener, but I didn't know he had a talent for topiary. Those cross-stitched ornaments are great, Phillip. Sounds like a pleasant way to spend the winter too.

    I'm visiting by way of Carol at Maydreamsgardens' blog. What an incredible collection of garden ornaments! Where do you find them ?

    I was born in Jasper and grew up not far from you in Winfield. I was back home this year and was amazed to see that while there are some beautiful old homes not that many people seem interested in gardening !

    You have an incredible garden and I can see that you've put your heart and soul in it - it shows !

    You've got a great collection, Phillip and it does look festive ~ I have just a few, but one of them is the exact same St Fiacre. Mine hangs up all year on the veranda so maybe it doesn't count as a Christmas ornament here.
