A Closer Look at Winter Damage

But first, take a look at this gorgeous rainbow that we had on Friday! The five-day stretch of warm temperatures last week really jump-started the garden. Now that plants are putting out new growth, it is easier to see what kind of damage the winter left. Back in mid-January, we experienced five straight days of below-freezing temperatures. This caused much damage in Portland and areas where frigid winds were a factor. Here, we were fortunate to not get the wind and the cold temperatures were dampened by a blanket of snow. That said, it was a tough time for the garden and there are noticeable casualties but no outright deaths that I have seen. The bottlebrush ( Callistemon 'Woodlander's Red') did not like the cold at all. It was planted six years ago, in the north-facing garden no less, and I've not experienced die-back on it until now. A local expert said to cut it all the way back so that is what I did. If it doesn't make it, I won't be too distraught. It is

Taking advantage of the plant sales

This is what happens when you go to Lowe's on a Saturday morning in mid-August. They were practically giving things away. I came home with my truck loaded and spent less than $50. A pyramid trellis was marked down to $19.95 (from $69!) and the plants were either 99 cents or $1.99. Rudbeckia, coneflowers, barberry "Crimson Pygmy", hyssop and Loropetalum "Pixie" were among my finds. Most of the plants are in pretty good condition too. I felt like a kid in a candy store!

  3. We have had the whole nursery on sale for a month now trying to make a little cash and make room for new stuff this fall. It always kills me to let the stuff go so cheap, but if someone is willing to come in and is willing to take care of the plant - who am I to complain.

  10. I must get my pick up to Lowes & Home Depot for some bargain shopping! Only problem is, we have three Lowes and two Home Depots in our area! We have rain coming from Tropical storm Fay so hopefully the start to the end of the drought.

  16. Hey Phillip! You must have been on cloud nine that day. I know I would have been. This is the best time of the season to get deals like that, but you really raked in the deals! My problem is that I've overplanted EVERYWHERE and have no business buying plants now. Then, again.... ;-)

  18. Our Lowes does the same thing $1.00 plants. I fill up the whole truck then have to come home and find "space" in an already too full garden. Don't you love it! It's like you can't imagine passing up a deal like that even if you have no space.
My garden is constantly changing due to the new additions flowers :)
    What a joy!
Love your Dutchman's Pipe vine! It really looks gorgeous!
    Enjoy today~
