The 2024 Garden Year

January 19, 2024 January Our year started with snow, ice and frigid temperatures in mid-January. Our temperatures stayed below freezing for almost a week. I think it was the most consistent cold that we've experienced since moving here. Fortunately, it was a dry snow so there wasn't too much damage. Once again, we almost lost the azara and I'm afraid there would have been some breakage if I had not kept knocking the ice off. February 14, 2024 February In past years, it seems that inclement weather seems to hit around Michael's birthday in mid-February. After the January snow and ice, this month was actually quite tame. Nothing exciting to report - mostly birdwatching . Early flowers like hellebores, cyclamen and crocus begin to bloom in mid month. March 3, 2024 March I got into a walking routine which I'm happy to report I am continuing this year. You get to the point where you feel guilty if you miss a day. On the cover!

A photo of our fall garden is on the cover of the October issue of Alabama Gardener. I don't have the issue yet but there should be a story inside about our fall garden.  I hope you will take a look. We usually receive our copy around the 15th and I'm not sure when the issues appear on the store shelves.

    Phillip!!! How thrilling! :D Congratulations on getting on that magazine cover. The only magazine cover I think I'd have a chance in hell at getting onto, is the kind that resides in plastic at the very back of the shelf. My garden would never make it. Yours is beautiful! :D

    Congratulations on the cover. That's kind of like a musician making the cover of Rolling Stone.

    I was looking for information about various roses and googled Madame Plantier. It led me to a web site called A Southern Garden and a photograph with the name Phillip Oliver on it. Ah-ha, that's the guy who posts Dirt Therapy.

    Looking through the photos of your 20 year project it seems that you are no ordinary amateur gardener. Keep it up. You are an inspiration to the rest of us.

    Carol, it is my photo and actually I wrote the story. I've being writing stories for them for years - mostly on other gardens.
