The Newt (Somerset, England)

After Stourhead , the second garden on the tour that day was "The Newt". Talk about a change in garden styles! As I review my photos, I can appreciate the beauty and style of this garden, but I must confess, it was one of my least favorites.  I remember mostly the heat (it was one of our warmer days), the glaring sun with few trees in sight, and the commercial feel of the whole enterprise. But then again, this was mainly a vegetable garden and I was having an "off" day (I had just toured Stourhead, where I missed some of the main landmarks). The entrance took us through an area with gift shops and display areas (nice thing about photos is you see things you missed - I had not noticed the intricate ceiling design) - We did have an actual tour guide at this one, and he led us through the entire garden - Down a winding, blinding white walkway, towards the large vegetable garden - Leaving one vegetable garden, we headed up a grassy avenue with water features.  Along th...

Study Weekend Garden Tours - Southeast & North Portland - pt. 1

Despite all the work and hoopla of preparing for our open garden on Monday, I did manage to steal away on Friday and Saturday to visit the gardens in Portland. There were six gardens on Friday, located in the Southeast and North Portland neighborhoods.

Beginning with the first three -

Jenn Ferrante garden - Cool and calming, an oasis of serenity with pinks and blues and touches of chartreuse. And a majestic weeping beech.

Peter Eastman and Dayrol Griffin garden - another colorful oasis with many tropical touches and a well-executed street border planting.

Anne Davis & Miles McCoy garden - This small garden packs quite a punch with borders, potted plants and artistic touches. Check out that pathway!

More to come...

  1. Summer is so good in the PNW. The lush green is mind blowing. Totally took that in stride growing up there, now I find it unbelievable. Beautiful gardens, that's so great you had time to get away and see them. With all the planning you had going on!

  4. Must have been Garden Walk weekend, what a delight to see so many treasures! I assume the third photo down is the majestic weeping beech? It’s quite mystifying though, does it have red flowers?

  5. I haven't had a chance to go through my photos from the weekend yet, so this was a refreshing review of what we've seen. Nice to see what caught your eye at each of these gardens.
