More South Portland Study Weekend Gardens, pt. 2

The last three gardens on last Saturday's tour included a large shade garden, a tropical oasis and an Asian-inspired retreat. First, the Hilderbrand garden in Oregon City. This garden is set in a grove of Douglas Fir trees and has paved pathways that meander through plantings of dogwoods, hydrangeas, viburnums, kalmias and other shade-loving plants.  The garden of Michael Hicks and Megan Big John is a quarter-acre plot in West Linn. This garden is packed with plantings of tropical plants with big beautiful leaves and vibrant pops of color. Helena Wagner's "4 Seasons Garden" is a garden that I have visited in the past. It features an Asian-inspired theme with beautifully placed plants, with nice colors and contrasts. Text and photos by Phillip Oliver, Dirt Therapy

Study Weekend Garden Tours - Southeast & North Portland - pt. 1

Despite all the work and hoopla of preparing for our open garden on Monday, I did manage to steal away on Friday and Saturday to visit the gardens in Portland. There were six gardens on Friday, located in the Southeast and North Portland neighborhoods.

Beginning with the first three -

Jenn Ferrante garden - Cool and calming, an oasis of serenity with pinks and blues and touches of chartreuse. And a majestic weeping beech.

Peter Eastman and Dayrol Griffin garden - another colorful oasis with many tropical touches and a well-executed street border planting.

Anne Davis & Miles McCoy garden - This small garden packs quite a punch with borders, potted plants and artistic touches. Check out that pathway!

More to come...

  1. Summer is so good in the PNW. The lush green is mind blowing. Totally took that in stride growing up there, now I find it unbelievable. Beautiful gardens, that's so great you had time to get away and see them. With all the planning you had going on!

  3. All beautiful gardens. You're lucky to live in an area where so many people value their gardens.

  4. Must have been Garden Walk weekend, what a delight to see so many treasures! I assume the third photo down is the majestic weeping beech? It’s quite mystifying though, does it have red flowers?

  5. I haven't had a chance to go through my photos from the weekend yet, so this was a refreshing review of what we've seen. Nice to see what caught your eye at each of these gardens.
