Pruning 'Summer Crush' Hydrangea in Late Summer or Early Fall
Hydrangea 'Summer Crush' in June... in September Pruning can be a complicated project, especially when it comes to hydrangeas (I can think of one more plant that causes pruning headaches - clematis). That said, if you grow many hydrangeas, especially different types, once you get the hang of it, it begins to come naturally. I used to rarely prune my hydrangeas because I had more space. Now, with a smaller garden, I'm finding that some are getting too large for comfort. Case in point, 'Summer Crush'. It is actually not a huge hydrangea, but it does get larger than advertised - about 5 feet in my garden (the tag said 3-4'). 'Summer Crush' is in the 'Endless Summer' line of hydrangeas and they are among the easier to prune. This is because they bloom on both old and new wood. Therefore, no matter when you prune, you should get blooms. It is the older hydrangeas, the ones that only bloom on old wood, that you have to be careful with. I would recomm...
Hi Phillip, great shots of foliage! I think I still pay too much attention to blooms and to little to foliage. You are inspiring me to have a closer look at the foliage of a plant and value it more. I love the photo of the ivy with the bells with the green patina!

Love those colorful leaves. My ornamental cabbage froze to death. It was pretty while it lasted. Can't wait to hear what you name your new blog/garden.
ReplyDeleteNow I know why Henry Mitchell so loved Italian Arum.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous as always Phillip!
ReplyDeleteJust stunning! Although I do love flowers, foliage is so much more important.
ReplyDeleteDare I tell you that the Ivy is "Gold Child" ? "Gold Heart" has a yellow center. Would you like some?
I love the name 'Shady Pines' Keep us posted.
Love the Shady Pines idea... :)
ReplyDeleteI love your blog name!! I also love these foliage close ups. :o)
ReplyDeleteThat ornamental kale is amazing! What a beautiful color! And thank you so much! Thanks to you I now know that the tree the birds planted for me that I love so much is a possomhaw holly!
ReplyDeleteImpressed by the holly. Haven't come across that kind before.
ReplyDeletePhillip putting Shady in the name will get you traffic from some of the porn sites. I have a post on my blog called the Hooligans Big Snow about my dogs experiences with the snow of 2011. You won't believe the traffic from these sites along with spammers trying to hack my site I have for that one story. My daffs are starting to bloom.
