Pruning 'Summer Crush' Hydrangea in Late Summer or Early Fall

Hydrangea 'Summer Crush' in June... in September Pruning can be a complicated project, especially when it comes to hydrangeas (I can think of one more plant that causes pruning headaches - clematis). That said, if you grow many hydrangeas, especially different types, once you get the hang of it, it begins to come naturally. I used to rarely prune my hydrangeas because I had more space. Now, with a smaller garden, I'm finding that some are getting too large for comfort. Case in point, 'Summer Crush'. It is actually not a huge hydrangea, but it does get larger than advertised - about 5 feet in my garden (the tag said 3-4'). 'Summer Crush' is in the 'Endless Summer' line of hydrangeas and they are among the easier to prune. This is because they bloom on both old and new wood. Postcards from Santa Rosa Beach




We are back from our annual beach vacation. This year we were at Santa Rosa Beach again (between Destin and Panama City Beach, Florida). The weather was beautiful, sunny days in the 70s and mild mornings and evenings. Only one day of rain - the last day we were there - but I enjoyed it because we were in a house with a tin roof and I was curled up with a good book. Our house also had walls of windows overlooking the beach. It was very cozy.

    What a fantastic spot for a relaxing vacation! I was feeling quite relaxed just looking at your gorgeous photographs on Saturday morning even without the soft sand and the warm temperatures.

    Florida is a really big state, but do you ever get down there in Jan thru Mar? We spend those months in central Florida and would love to visit if you are anywhere nearby - like I said, I know it is a huge state, but...
