Iford Manor (Part 2)
(Continued from Part 1) ... I knew that Iford Manor was my kind of garden when I saw the statue of "Dying Gaul" perched on top of a wall. We can't afford one for our garden but we do have a little version inside the house - The garden continues uphill with areas that are naturalized as well as manicured - A very theatrical area with some of the statuary from Peto's travels - Peto loved curved benches. In addition to Italian gardens, he was influenced by the Arts & Crafts movement. Some think that his love of curved benches came from the paintings of Lawrence Alma-Tadema. Some copies of his works were found in Peto's files - "Expectations" by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema Small buildings also dotted the landscape - The largest building was the cloister which housed more of his classical treasures - There is even a Japanese garden - Various pathways and woodland trails led to a road above the gardens. Wow,that Annabelle is huge. Mine has never been that tall. It does spread wider yearly. I don't mind because she is so pretty. Love that flame calla lily. I have a bright yellow one that lives here. I was surprised that it wintered over. I am tempted to move it to a different place so I can see it more easily. I am afraid to move it because it might not live. ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful collection of Hydrangeas, truly hard to pick a favorite. The orange Calla Lili is gorgeous! I especially with the spiky purple something-or-other in front of it (veronica?). You came home with 6 plants and no picture of your haul?
ReplyDeleteI have mail-ordered quite a few things from them and have been so happy with the service and good prices. Nice to see that the place also looks awesome.
ReplyDeleteAh, sigh! So beautiful. The photo of the orange callas with the purple veronica(?) below and purple clematis above--oooh!
ReplyDeleteYes, we have to see what plants you got. This is garden blogging: there are rules. ;^)
Wow! Just amazing plants. Sigh......
