The Garden House (Devon, England)

The destinations are beginning to blur but looking at the tour guide booklet, I see that we are now in Plymouth. Today, we visited two gardens designed by Keith Wiley.  The first is The Garden House , where Wiley worked as Head Gardener for 25 years (from 1978-2003). The 10-acre estate was purchased in the 1940s by former Eton schoolmaster Lionel Fortescue and his wife Katherine. It was formerly home to the  vicars of Buckland Monachronum. The Fortescue's renovated the gardens and ran a market garden business and raised cattle.  The remains of some of the original buildings in the vicarage still stand in the garden and serve as a romantic backdrop in the Walled Garden - I loved the way they had massed ferns together. Just stunning! Surrounding the walled garden and venturing out away from the house are more naturalistic plantings  - Today, the head gardener is Nick Haworth, who was previously head gardener at Greenway , which we visited earlier.  Keith Wiley lef...

The Garden From a Different Lens


It is always interesting to see someone else's photographs of your garden. My friend and co-worker David Goddard was recently over. He is an excellent photographer. Here are some photos he shared -

    He really captures the lushness. The textures and colors foil each other so well. I was curious about the perspective of the graveled area; it surprised me that he didn’t zoom in more, as this is a blank area. I’m no photog, tho. These are magazine worthy.

    Beautiful photos. Your garden would be lovely no matter who was taking the pictures but David has a great eye and used it well. My views of my garden are usually filtered by all the things that need to be done. If I can step away from that and enjoy it for what it is at that moment, it always shifts everything and sometimes even takes my breath away. Thanks for sharing these beautiful views.

    I wouldn't have recognized it as your garden! Except for the purple wall... Totally different perspective, just as gorgeous though!

    Beautiful no matter how you look at it. I do agree that others look at our gardens different and it is fun to see it in photos their way.
