Japanese Maples Fall Color
'Skeeter's Broom' is the most colorful maple in our garden. I have just returned from a 2-week trip to Japan. This was my first ever trip outside the United States. It was an amazing experience and one I will never forget. Japan was wonderful - they really have their act together and I think the U.S. could learn a few things from them. There was one disappointment on the trip - the fall color had barely begun there and was really just beginning as we left. That is okay because the gardens were still spectacular, and I got a nice shot of fall color when I got back. 'Ryusen' I missed a few things - our ginkgo had just turned a glorious color the day before I left, and the leaves were gone by the time I got back. 'Sango-Kaku' I came home to many leaves on the ground but still a lot on the trees. 'Osakazuki', a beautiful red maple always changed color very late and therefore doesn't usually last long. When I left there was no color but a few remaini
OMG...congrats!!!!! That's amazing...and a beautiful shot, as well!
ReplyDeletePhillip!!! How thrilling! :D Congratulations on getting on that magazine cover. The only magazine cover I think I'd have a chance in hell at getting onto, is the kind that resides in plastic at the very back of the shelf. My garden would never make it. Yours is beautiful! :D
ReplyDeleteThanks Scott.
ReplyDeleteKyna, never say never!
Awesome, congrats! :)
ReplyDeleteHow exciting! Congratulations! Because of you, I now subscribe to Alabama Gardener, and I always look forward to each issue. Now I am doubly excited about the October issue. Can't wait!

ReplyDeletePhillip,
ReplyDeleteWhat a great way to see fall arriving with your garden on the cover! KUDOs!
Phillip,
ReplyDeleteI once had the inside back cover(monarch photo) on NC Wildlife magazine, this is a lot better!
Congrats! What a wonderful compliment to all of your hard work!
ReplyDeleteCongrats Phillip. You deserve the cover. I've got to find me a mag now. I 'liked' the facebook page for the mag and left a comment.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to get it Phillip! Way to go! I hope this fall turns out ok. We are so dry, two of my dogwoods are losing their brown leaves at this time! Keep up the great work!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful honor Phillip! I wish I could see the article, but not likely I'm going to run into Alabama Gardening here in Ohio!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the cover. That's kind of like a musician making the cover of Rolling Stone.
ReplyDeleteI was looking for information about various roses and googled Madame Plantier. It led me to a web site called A Southern Garden and a photograph with the name Phillip Oliver on it. Ah-ha, that's the guy who posts Dirt Therapy.
Looking through the photos of your 20 year project it seems that you are no ordinary amateur gardener. Keep it up. You are an inspiration to the rest of us.
...and what a beautiful cover it is! I am thrilled for you and that others are getting to see how splendid your garden is...gail
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! Well deserved.
