More Japanese Maples

It seems I was a bit premature on my post about Japanese maples a few weeks ago. The "Boskoop Glory" was outrageously beautiful then but now all of its leaves have fallen. In the meantime, the "Bloodgood" that was rather drab next to it, has suddenly intensified.



 
In the back, next to the garage, is one of the most beautifully colored Japanese Maples and I don't know the name of it. It also sits next to a "Bloodgood" variety. The brilliant yellow and orange leaves next to the crimson of the "Bloodgood" is what I'm guessing must be like a religious experience!

The Japanese Maples have never disappointed me with their fall color. You keep thinking that the color isn't going to be spectacular but you just have to be patient. It will come!

They are just gorgeous. The two I planted in the front yard are suppose to get 20 feet. One is 'Atropurpureum' and I'm not sure of the other. Each year they struggle thru the summer and I wonder will they live. This is the third year so they should take off I hope. My 'Virdis' turned orange this year for the very first time!

There is really nothing quite like them for that amazingly intense color during autumn...I totally look forward to them every year.

I have several varieties of Japanese Maples. One at the end of the driveway I dug up as a seedling that came up under a large one at my old house. Which I knew the variety. I have 3 young Bloodgood's I purchased on close out this year. One is still full with leaves. I think they are going to be nice when they get established.

Oh, Phillip, how I would love to have a Japanese maple. I remember them from my previous life up north, but apparently they can't tolerate our heat. I wonder if one would enjoy life as an understory tree in a vacant spot under my oaks in total shade. How I wish...

Oh my, I'm so jealous of all that color. I do have 'Bloodgood' and count on it being the last one to show some great color. It's looking good now. I remember when you put that gravel down around the maple. I think it looks great now!

Fabulous!!! My favorite season to garden, not many bugs, sun on my back not beating down on my head, weeds are slower growing.....

Ah, the clematis, one of the most beautiful and frustrating of plants. I counted five books on my shelf devoted to them, and I still have to consult them every year when it is time to prune. This year I'm doing something new - moving a few that are obviously not doing well (lack of sun, more than likely). I'm worried about one of my favorites - 'Jackmanii Superba'.  First, I had to dig it up when the new gate was constructed. This clematis was massive, and the bottom stalk looked like a small tree. Winter Projects

Pinus contorta 'Chief Joseph' I was really too harsh in my last post concerning the weather. It has actually been a very mild winter, and looking back, I see that I have completed several projects. The first, back in November, was a redo of the twig fence. This has been an ongoing project that has left me unsatisfied. At the beginning, I just piled the twigs up, along an existing chain fence, and soon realized that they would never stand on their own. Critters (squirrels!) continually knocked twigs out of the arrangement, but over time, it was simply gravity that caused problems. I used various methods to try and keep the twigs in place, including using wire to tie them and fence posts to brace them. All temporary solutions. Gravity always reared its ugly head.  At the end of summer, I decided on a different approach. Ruby Tuesday's Strawberry Tall Cake

Much to my dismay, I have cut back on sugar consumption. Difficult, because I love sweet treats, but on the other hand, I want to be a healthier person. I still like to bake and I've just discovered  "Prue Leith's Cotswold Kitchen"  on You Tube and enjoying it very much. That said, I normally make a dessert at least once per week, but I try to have only a piece or two, and share the rest. Going through some of my cookbooks, I came across a series of books by Todd Wilbur, who reproduces recipes from popular chain restaurants.  In the first volume, I saw the Ruby Tuesday Strawberry Tall Cake and remembered that it was a favorite of ours. I haven't visited a Ruby Tuesday in ages and I don't know if they still serve this. I decided to give it a try and it turned out pretty good.
