The Winter That Wasn't

Phormium 'Wings of Gold', Eucalyptus neglecta,
Miscanthus 'Little Miss'

Everybody is talking about our weather... or rather, the lack of weather. It is lovely this week and the prediction for the entire week - sun, no rain, and temperatures in the 50s.

I am cautiously waiting for the other shoe to drop, but until then, I'm cleaning, transplanting, and lining up projects.

Today, I saw snowdrops blooming...

There are other flowers if you look closely. The manzanitas are wonderful early-blooming shrubs. 'Sunset', at our driveway entrance, has put on a lot of growth. I have a difficult time photographing the flowers, but they are there...

Arctostaphylos 'Sunset'

Hebe 'Imposter', Pieris 'Little Heath', Skimmia

So far, I think we've had two nights just below freezing. This semi-evergreen tree is Sycoparrotia semidecidua, a cross between Chinese fighazel (Sycopsis sinensis) and Parrotia persica, was already defoliated this time last year. Today, lots of leaves left and gleaming with backlighting from the sunshine -

Other winter interest -

Asian Jasmine (Trachelospermum 'Ogon Nishiki')

Miscanthus 'Little Miss'

Loquat (Eriobotrya japonica

Pinus contorta 'Chief Joseph'

Cornus 'Midwinter Fire'

Bay Tree (Laurus nobilis)

Everything looks good, Phillip! I love the Pieris and wish I could grow it. After all that lovely rain from October through December, we've had weather whiplast. Our temperatures are now VERY warm, at least for January - we peaked at 79F today and our humidity had fallen to 20%.

It's amazing how energizing the sunny days are, and with a bit more daylight. 'Little Miss' is really pretty, you have color everywhere!
