Take Time to Smell the Roses

'Julia Child'

The roses look great right now, but then again, I think they always do when they are having that first flush, and the leaves are usually unblemished. They are definely the highlight of the garden at the moment.

'Eden' and 'Phyllis Bide'

'Robin Hood' and 'Alchymist'

'Veilchenblau'

'Westerland'

'Buff Beauty'

'Champagne Wishes'

'Chinatown'

'Dublin Bay'

'The Impressionist'

'Lady of Shallot'

And to think those were bare, thorny canes just a few months ago... The rose covers arbors are particularly gorgeous. I hope people visiting during the open garden days had the opportunity to enjoy that spectacular display.

I would be hard pressed to choose a favorite view - they are all spectacular! Looks like it's a great year for roses there! It's been pretty good here in Alabama, too.

It was such an enormous pleasure to visit your garden when all the roses look so stunning. Perfect timing for your Open Garden!

Looking at HPSO open gardens I'm amazed at how well roses do up here. Yours are spectacular and I love your selections. I did grow 'Buff Beauty' in SoCal which does well, but Veilchenblau' did not thrive. I'm almost tempted to try roses again. I'd grow 'Lady Hillingdon' again in a heartbeat if I could find her. Hope your open garden went smoothly cuz judging by your roses the garden was ready for its closeup!

Perfect timing, your visitors were very lucky! I love your gate, so handsome. I agree the first big flush of roses is the most impressive.

Your roses truly are STUNNING. What fertilizer do you like to use, and how often? I had Chinatown at my old house, it was a favorite. We’ll see if I end up adding it here also. Much less space to work with!

Yes, it is amazing how fast they become full plants.

Choosing a favorite is indeed difficult.

I have always wanted to grow 'Lady Hillingdon' but have never tried. 'Buff Beauty' is a favorite but it has become such a monster.

I bet they do well in your climate!

I fertilizer in March with alfafa pellets. Then I don't do anything until after the first flush of bloom is over. Then I use liquid fish fertilizer about once a month, up until late August.
